About Bethel Park, PA
Bethel Park is a borough with home rule status in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, located approximately 7 miles south of Pittsburgh. With a population of about 33,577 (2020 census), it is one of the larger suburbs in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, covering 11.7 square miles at an average elevation of 1,197 feet above sea level. The highest point in the borough is Rocky Ridge at 1,370 feet, in the southwestern portion - making terrain and elevation a notable factor in local weather patterns.
The area was originally settled around 1800 and incorporated as a borough on March 17, 1949. Its name comes from Bethel Presbyterian Church, whose roots date back to 1776 when John McMillan, the first Presbyterian missionary west of the Allegheny Mountains, held services here.
Bethel Park has an interesting piece of American history: the first armored car robbery in the United States took place here on March 11, 1927, when a Brinks truck carrying a mining payroll was ambushed by the Flathead gang using dynamite.
The borough sits at the margin between the Pittsburgh Low Plateau and the Waynesburg Hills sections of the Allegheny Plateau, characterized by a maturely dissected landscape where streams converge through rolling terrain. The underlying geology consists of sandstone, limestone, shale, and coal layers - remnants of ancient coastal environments from roughly 300 million years ago.
All three of Pittsburgh Regional Transit light rail lines run through Bethel Park, and the borough is served by Pennsylvania Route 88 and U.S. Route 19, both lined with commercial development.
